Running on the beach

Running on the beach

Summer is the time for vacation. This makes it a bit more difficult, but not impossible to maintain your running and walking routine. In fact, a week or two of a change in your training can leave you feeling physically and mentally refreshed while keeping you fit and ready to resume your program where you left off. Below are a few tips on keeping you fresh, fit, and ready to hit it again when you get back:

  • Get it in first thing. Unstructured days are great for relaxation, but make it very difficult to plan around for training. If you run or walk for 30 to 45 minutes before the day’s activities, you won’t have to worry about fitting it in later.
  • Take a break from long runs. Vacations are not always the best time to worry about getting your long runs in. You have different routes, potentially a different climate, and your nutrition and hydration may be different than usual. Focus on consistent, shorter efforts to maintain your fitness.

  • Create memories. I don’t usually advocate running with your phone, but running different routes while on vacation and taking pictures provide great memories to look back on in February when running through snow and ice.
  • Vary your routine. Not up for a 40 minute run while everyone else lies on the beach? Do a 15 minute warm-up jog and then do some wind-sprints in the sand. Finish with a few push ups and a jump in the lake/ocean!
  • Jump in a local race. I’m not saying you have to race it seriously, but it will at least get you to cover the distance and you’ll be introduced to the local running community. Google your vacation location and “running” and you will likely find all of the local running information.
  • Enjoying a local race with my family on vacation

Enjoy your summer, your vacations and your friends and family. There is no reason you can’t do those things and enjoy your running/walking as well. Change and variety are good for your training and once you come back you’ll be ready to get right back into your regular training routine. Have fun!
