The importance of proper stretching

Symptoms

  • Pain felt at the front of your knee, around the kneecap (patella)
  • Pain with walking, squatting, kneeling and stair climbing
  • Pain under the kneecap when walking downstairs or downhill

How is it caused?

  1. Muscle imbalance: tight IT band , quadriceps weakness, hamstring weakness
  2. Poor alignment: flat feet, high arches, genu valgus or “knocked knees”

How is it treated?

  1. Stretching: IT Band, Hamstrings, Quadriceps
  2. Strengthening: Quadriceps, Gluteus minimus and medius, Hamstrings
  3. Taping for the Patella (kneecap)
  4. Assess footwear: see you local running store or podiatrist
  5. Activity modification: control symptoms before increasing running distances
  6. Icing for pain control

About Sandra and Alicia.

Sandra Harrop (left) has been a Registered Physiotherapist for over two years. She works primarily with Total Knee Replacements and Total Hip Replacements at Sunnybrook Holland Orthopaedic and Arthritic Centre. Sandra is an avid runner, cyclist and volleyball player and in 2013, she completed 3 half marathons, 3 triathlons and a 10K. Alicia Savona has been a Registered Physiotherapist for 9 years. She currently works at Sunnybrook Hospital in the Working Condition Program. She has enjoyed running for the last 18 years, and completed many fun runs and road races.
