For some reason my coach Seanna told me I had to run 17K as part of my training. I thought she was nuts. Isn’t my goal to run 15K? Why a 17K run then?
She’s the boss, so…
I did it on Labour Day. Apropos, I’d say. It was a significant amount of labour, indeed.
Here’s what it looked like:
After 2 1/4 hours of running, I felt like I’d just done a 12-hour shift walking on concrete and every part of my body was angry…even my neck, for some reason. But, I made it.
My plan was the same one I used for my first 15K attempt. And it worked perfectly.
I stayed as close as possible to my usual long run route because I am a creature of habit, so comforted by the familiar in times of trauma. I just ran around some landmarks a few times in order to add to the distance.
Running this far is a mental game, as everyone says. With every kilometer down, I just counted them off…1 down, 16 to go…2 down, 15 to go…and so on.
With 17K down, I know that I can do 15K. That’s why Seanna wanted me to run 17K.
My focus now is to maintain my health by eating and sleeping well, and getting the rest my body needs to perform well on September 20th.
With the training well in hand, I’m now focused on fundraising. I’m starting a little later than I usually do. My first fundraising email went out this morning to my sponsors from last year who together raised $5,800 for the Family Navigation Project. Tomorrow I’ll send one out to everyone on my list who didn’t sponsor me last year.
My goal is $5,000. Fingers crossed!
